What Mother’s Day Was

May 13, 2017July 7, 2017 Tamara Canup

May 13th, 2017. 9:24am and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. Weathermen have been threatening thunderstorms for two days, but so far the only action we've seen is dark overhead clouds and exhausting humidity. Weeks ago I knew this would be hard. I told my partner that if I prepared for it, I'd be better off in the… Continue reading What Mother’s Day Was

Good morning! May your blood sugars be low and all your favorite foods be low-carb! 🍳🥓🥑 . I believe normalizing certain aspects of life that aren't shown on TV or in movies is important. So, I'm going to start opening up to you guys about my #diabetes, just as I've been open about my #PCOS in the past. If you've never known someone with #diabetestype2, then I hope through my openness you can learn a bit about this disease and how some people manage it. . So! First off, every morning I check my glucose (blood sugar) levels. Normal people should have a fasting blood sugar of less than 100. This is a measurement of how much glucose is in your blood despite you not having eaten in about 8 hours. For people who are diabetic, we still have waaaaay too much glucose in our blood, so the morning measurement is a good way for us to gauge how our diets are effecting us, if our meds are working, and so on. . (Fun fact: dehydration can raise blood sugar! We flush sugars when we urinate, but if we're dehydrated our body can't flush enough out! All the more reason to stay on top of your water intake!) . After checking my glucose levels I like to drink a low carb protein smoothie or shake. It's a great way for me to get a big punch of protein first thing in the morning, especially since I'm still adjusting to eating breakfast every day. And then I just carry on with my day, counting my calories and carbs so I can help my body keep my blood sugar under control! . So, that's a bit of what my mornings look like! One day soon I'll show you guys my glucometer and explain what it does and how it works! . Have a great morning and I hope you learned something new! . . . #goodmorning #morning #type2diabetes #bodypositive #bodypositivity #bopo #bodyposi #bopowarrior #loveyourbody #loveyourself #polycysticovariansyndrome #bloodsugar #glucose #glucometer #breakfast #lowcarb #lowcarbmeals #weightloss #health #healthy
After years of working 9-5 jobs, I got used to not eating breakfast. When I stopped working to be a SAHM, I never got back into the swing of eating breakfast, even though I made it for my kiddo every morning. About a month ago when my doctor announced I have diabetes type 2, she asked, "You're eating breakfast, right?" I shrugged. "Eh, not really?" . She shook her head and told me I have to eat breakfast because my body's sensitivity to insulin will be impacted by my breakfast habits. I felt like a fool for not listening to the old adage, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." And I wonder if, given my genetics and that diabetes runs in my family, I could have avoided this years ago if I'd been more careful with my carb intake and I'd actually eaten breakfast every day, instead of skipping it for years. . Fortunately, my doctor is hopeful we can quickly reverse this. It's not yet so bad that I need insulin; just medication, exercise, and very few carbs. So, there's hope. And I can feel that hope when I wake up and make breakfast. . This morning it's a favorite: microwave scrambled eggs with turkey bacon bits and cheddar. It's super easy too. Spray the inside of a microwave-safe mug with cooking spray, mix 2 eggs with pepper and bacon bits, and microwave your mug in 30 second increments, stirring after each 30 seconds. Within about a minute and a half your eggs will be cooked and scrambled. Sprinkle on some cheese and you're good to go. . Springtime in Alabama is kind of incredible. As long as you dont mind the tornados. . Took a walk on my favorite trail this afternoon. I'm grateful for places I can escape to. . I've been trying to find the words to express what I'm feeling and what I feel must come next for me. I know I have to continue to be honest with myself and true to myself and my needs. . I have shared myself with you guys with complete honesty and as much vulnerability as possible. Nearly every facet of my life is an open book for anyone to read because I never want to feel shame for being who I am. And I don't want others to feel that shame either. . So, here is the reality: I'm losing weight. I'm going to continue to lose weight. Diabetes Type 2 runs in my family. And one of the ways I can control it and beat it is through substantial weight loss. . If you're following this account and you can not accept my need to lose weight, I accept your need to unfollow. I have to do this. Not for society. Not for culture. Not because I'm ashamed. Because I want to live and live well. I am a mother. I want to grow old and watch my child grow up. . I have loved this body as it is now. And I will love it as it changes and as I make changes to it that will keep me alive. This is my journey now. And I will be talking about it and I will be celebrating it. I refused to accept shame as a fat woman and I refuse to accept shame as a woman trying to lose weight. . If that's okay with you, then I'm happy to have you. . . . #myview #myviewrightnow #trail #walkingtrail #gettinghealthy #bodypositive #bopo #bopowarrior #bodypositivity #plussize #selflove #weightloss #walking #loveyourself #diabetes #diabetestype2 #type2diabetes #bodyposi
Hello. New pillow from @targetstyle's new #OpalHouse line came in. The long one in the center. Isn't it gorgeous? I'm enamored. . I wrote a blog post. It's about the diabetes and about body positivity and self love and how I feel like a hypocrite. It's hard to explain, in some ways. Read the post. I tried to make sense of it there. . I love you guys. I'm getting better. Finding my footing. Finding myself again. .
