My Mustache – No-Shave November & Movember

It changes your life in a moment and it changes your life permanently. Whether you’ve been diagnosed or someone you love has been diagnosed, everything in your life after that moment is built around or amongst your diagnosis and treatment.

Cancer walks closely with my family. My grandfather had colon cancer that eventually took over his entire body and his life. My mother lost her battle to uterine cancer in 2016. Cancer dances through my family, a constant partner, affecting all of us either directly or indirectly, and most days I struggle under the fear that eventually, I too will take Cancer’s hand and begin a deadly sashay across the dance floor.

Every November predominately men choose to stop shaving their faces in order to raise awareness for the health issues that affect men, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The goal of organizations like No Shave November and Movember is to encourage men (and those who love them) to get checked, stay involved and aware of their risks and treatment options, and donate to cancer research organizations, like @americancancersociety. Early detection is life changing, but you have to be aware of symptoms and signs first. And that’s why awareness events in November are so important.

Both my mother and my grandfather failed to see the signs because they simply weren’t aware of them. By the time they were diagnosed, their cancers were advanced and the survival odds were low. And yes, they lost their battles.

She smiled through it all. Always.

In honor of the people we know and love who are at risk for testicular and prostate cancer, I am choosing to participate in #Movember and #NoShaveNovember. For the rest of the month of November, you’re going to see my facial hair growing proudly. I’m not going to bleach it, wax it, pluck it, or shave it. And I hope every time you see it, you’re reminded that testicular cancer affects 1 in every 263 men, and prostate cancer affects 1 in every 7.

The beginning of my month of no shaving, plucking, waxing, or bleaching!

I am so excited to do this and I hope you will consider joining me. Below I’ve linked to various organizations connected to this topic so you can check them out and join in as well.
